Just learned that the Commander from Nier: Automata’s name is Shiro (White). Not that big of a deal until you remember that Shiro was Grimoire Weiss’s hated pet name in the Japanese text of Nier. Between that and A2’s template being a girl who lived with her grandmother (also Kainé’s background), and the Emils…you wonder what’s an allusion and what’s some kind of technological reincarnation.
(Shiro is also a common Japanese dog’s name, akin to Spot, which makes Grimoire Weiss’s opposition to the name seem much less pompous and strange than his hatred of “Weiss” in the English version. It’s also a common human name, of course, but it’s the tone of it.)
Nier: Automata ending B but 9S asks 2B to smother him instead and it ends on an awkward, 40-second-long pause
My favorite part of Nier Automata is still accidently pushing a rigid 9S across the screen, or seeing him fall off the screen and fly back up like nothing happened.
